A WOODEN CAT'S SECRET

(7-8 min short film screenplay, romance)

EPISODE 1

FADE IN

INT. A SMALL ROOM OF A CITY FLAT - EVENING

Electric light is on. Furniture is quite simple. An old brown wardrobe stays nearby a new elegant dresser. A blue coloured sofa with a decorated cushion stays by the wall, opposite the wardrobe. The only window is curtained. In front of the window there is a table with a computer.

We see a nice young woman dressed in a light evening gown sitting at table typing a text. She has blonde hair with a wispy fringe. Her round face is serious; eyes are focused on the screen. From time to time she glances at a sheet of paper that lies right upon a pile of other similar papers.

A childish chirp was sounding somewhere inside the flat. The chirp becomes louder but then it ceases. Quick steps run across a corridor and stop at the door of the room. The woman turns.

We see a little girl - Lilly, who is about six year old. Her long hair is plaited. Big grey eyes keep a question.

LILLY'S MUM (smiling at daughter): Hi, sweetheart! Are you playing?

LILLY (running to mum and stretching a doll): Look at this dress, mum! Do you like it?

MUM (looking at the doll): What a lovely dress! Where did you get this?

LILLY (self-satisfied): I did it myself!

MUM (scaring): How?! Where did you take a needle?

LILLY: No needles. I did it without a needle

MUM (easily sighing, noticing that the doll is just wrapped with a piece of cloth): Well, I see.

Mum's eyes return to the computer screen. Lilly looks there too.

MUM: I have some work to do… So… Please, wait for a while. O'key?

LILLY (obediently): A-ha

MUM (sighing): This report should be done till tomorrow but I... Er-r... I simply cannot finish it.

LILLY (pronouncing new word): Re-port

MUM: Lilly, sweetheart, play for ten minutes and I'll come.

LILLY (suddenly frowning): Mum, why did you quarrel with dad?

Mum sighed and glanced away.

MUM (reviving): Lilly, please, go. I have to finish this work today. I will be soon.

Lilly goes to the elegant dresser where many china figures stay on a shelf. Among the figures there is a wooden Siamese cat. It has funny green round eyes. The wood colour is chosen so nice that it's completely natural without any paint.

LILLY (touching the wooden cat with a finger): Dad presented you this cat, didn't he?

MUM (returning and glancing at the figure): Yeah, on Valentine Day.

LILLY (taking the cat): Mum, who was that Valentine?

MUM (irritating): May I work?

LILLY: May I play with this cat?

MUM (typing the text again): Of course, you may.

Lilly takes the wooden cat and runs from the room.
