MY DISCOVERY

(7-8 min short film screenplay, romance)

EXT. SEA SHORE - DAY

Waves are pensively playing with shore pebbles. Sounds of the wash, wind gusts and seagulls crying are sounding.

A man's fingers pick one of pebbles which seems like an ancient pottery.

The man (HENRY, mid 30's) dressed in a threadbare jeans suit examines the chip. He passes his fingers over one side then over another. Finally he contentedly smiles and puts the chip into his pocket.

INT. HENRY'S STUDIO - NIGHT

A table lamp lights the familiar chip with an outline of a nice lady's portrait on its additionally whitened surface. A thin paintbrush is drawing new lines.

Henry starts whistling a popular merry melody (O.S.). The melody becomes louder.

Henry (in a T-shirt) is sitting by a table drawing the portrait.

The studio is obscurely lighted - only the table lamp illuminates the young man and his work.

The pop melody sounds louder. Henry finished his work - the beautiful colourful portrait of the nice lady on the chip's surface. An inscription beneath: "To Emma with love".

INT. AN HISTORICAL MUSEUM LOBBY - AFTERNOON

Pretty face of the lady, whose portrait has been drawn, shines with a smile. EMMA (late 20's, in an elegant grey suit) looks now at the chip on her palm, now at Henry.

EMMA: It's so… wonderful, Henry. How have you done this? You… you've… a real talent… Really, yeah… But Henry, it's…

Emma turns the chip and peers at its rough surface.

EMMA (whispering): This is a very ancient thing. Do you know? Perhaps… this is a chip of an amphora. Look at this engraving… Yeah, this resembles Egyptian ornament…

Henry sighs unwillingly glancing at the hardly seen ornament.

EMMA (speaking louder, lifting her look at Henry): Henry, where have you got it?

Henry stares at Emma trying to see her feelings concerning his work (the portrait).

EMMA (smiling and turning the chip back) : I appreciate this… but… Yeah, it's wonderful… but… Henry, you've drawn it right on… on a treasure… a historical treasure. See, this chip may belong to the Egyptian civilization… I simply cannot understand yet how it's possible. Where have you got it?

HENRY (heavily sighing): I've found this on the shore… If you dislike it, I…

EMMA (amazingly): On shore? Where?

HENRY (looking aside) : Saint Christopher Bay

EMMA (shrouding her shoulders): It simply cannot be…

HENRY (seriously): It can and… I'll even show you that place if you please… But… Ok. I will. Right now. Can you go out?

EMMA (nodding): Yeah, I can of course. I'm free.

Emma and Henry are going to the entrance.

EMMA (speaking quickly): This amphora may be made about three thousand years ago. I simply don't understand how this thing could appear on our shore… so far to the North. It would be a sensation! No… Impossible. Don't you foolish me, Henry?! (her voice becomes lower and lower while they are going farther)

INT. HENRY'S CAR - DAY

Typical city scenes are passing by behind windows of the white Chevrolet pickup. Emma watches them for some seconds and then turns to Henry. Henry tries to don't look at her, his empty look seems to be focused on the road ahead.

EMMA (uncertainly): Just imagine… an ancient ship cast its anchor by our shore and… And nobody knows about that… We're on the edge of a real discovery.

Henry nods. Emma stares at his sad face.

EMMA (sighing): You're offended… Sorry…

Emma looks down at the portrait, which she's keeping on her palm. Her lips break into a smile.

EMMA (lowly): Nobody has drawn me… Never… You're a talented artist, Henry. But… (a sigh) Henry, it verges to vandalism

HENRY (turning red): Vandalism? (a grin) Well…

EMMA (ardently) : This is our history! This is a treasure! Ancient art!

HENRY (grinning) : Art?! Treasure?! Wonderful! Well… and I'm a vandal… You spits on my feelings! You don't see anything except your ancient pots! Here is vandalism! Here! And you're a real vandal! You!

Emma bits her lips glancing now at Henry now aside.

EMMA (lowly) : Stop here.

Henry looks at her surprisingly.

EMMA: I… I don't want to pay this price… I thought you understand me! Stop here.

Henry pulls up the car. Emma opens the door and goes out.
